Institute of Historical Research
Institute of Historical Research was established in 1950’s, which is a branch of History and Culture School in Sichuan University. Xu Zhong-shu, the famous scholar, was the Institute’s first director. The Institute of Historical Research has many affiliated sections, the study fields cover Pre-Qin period history, Paleography, history of Weijin and South-North Dynasty, history of Tang Dynasty and Song dynasty, history of Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, Special history, archaeology, history of Modern China, World history, BaShu history and culture.
After established, Institute of History Research become famous for its stringent academic standards, high-level academic research and outstanding faculties. In the past 20 years, the Institute of Historical Research has obtained quite a few research projects, published more than 800 academic papers, 100 monographs. It has won more than 20 awards.
Nowadays, the study realms of Institute will focus on the Special history, which ranks number one in China recent year, history of Song dynasty and history of Modern China.

Institute of Tibetan Studies of China
Institute of Tibetan Studies of China,Sichuan University is a key scientific research institute by means of reorganizing and rebuilding the Tibet Archaeology and Historical and Cultural Research Center of former Sichuan University in 1999. This institute gives full play to the advantages of its southwestern location, academic speciality and tradition of attaching importance to the investigation and study of the Tibetan areas over the years, inherits the academic research fruits created by scholars of the older generation of the university, opens up the research field of new Tibetan areas, and has an important historical position in the research field of the Tibetan areas of the whole country.
The institute takes southwestern Tibetan areas (Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan etc.) and Gan-Qing Tibetan areas as its main research field. The research projects deal with the history of Tibet, the history of the Tibet-Hans relations, the economic history of the Tibetan areas, the sustained development of the Tibetan areas, archaeology and cultural relics of the Tibetan areas, Tibetan culture and art, the history of Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan traditional culture, the relations between Chinese Tibetan areas and South Asia and Central Asia, the history of internal and external Tibetology, the socio-economical condition of the Tibetan areas , the history of the relations between southwestern nationalities, the history of Tubo and so on. The presently formed research directions are as follows: Firstly, the present condition of the Tibetan areas and social development; Secondly, the history of the Tibet and the Tibet-Hans relations; Thirdly, archaeology of the Tibetan areas and Tibetan culture and art. The institute plans to start and set up new research directions of one to three during five years on the present basis.

Institute of Classical Literature Studies
As one of t the first Institute of Classical Literature Studies authorized by the State Ministry of Education, the Institute of Classical Literature Studies (ICLS), Sichuan University was set up in 1983. The institute has following main research area: Philosophical Literature, Historical Literature, Literary Literature and Studies of the Historical Literature with the technology of modern computer.
In the past 20 years, the ICLS has obtained research programs more than 40, published more than 1000 academic papers, 100 monographs. It has won more than 20 prizes.
Work together in unity of all members, the ICLS has published Quan Song Wen (180 volumes), the biggest paper concourse in the academic circles for the culture study of Song Dynasty; Song Ji Zhen Ben Cong Kan (108 volumes), a rare edition series of books; Song Hui Yao Ji Gao (electronic edition), worked together Harvard University and Central Research Institute of Taiwan province. Now the ICLS has become one of the centers for the culture and literature studies of Song Dynasty.
For the time being, all the members of the institute are centering upon the studies of the Confucianism literature, a big series of books of Confucianism literature—Ru Zang are being compiled, which brings to scholars’ close attention.

Institute of Urban Studies
The Institute of Urban Studies was founded in 1989 in the School of History and Culture, Sichuan University. As the first academic organization on urban studies in China, it has gained a great reputation for its abundant distinguished research on Chinese modern urban history and contemporary urban studies. This research is devoted to a wide range of subjects, including: Chinese urbanization and modernization; the mode, features and variety of Chinese urban development; urban development and regional economy; urban social transformation; urban life; urban culture and urban planning.
Since it was founded, the Institute of Urban Study in Sichuan University has become famous for its stringent academic standards, high-level academic research and outstanding faculties, and has played an important role in Chinese urban studies. It is one of the sponsors of the Chinese Society of Ancient Capitals and keeps close contact with numerous institutions, The institute have undertaken a series of most important research projects of the Chinese National Social Sciences Foundation, including Urban History of Modern Chongqing, An Study on the Variety of Cities in Modern China, Urban Development and Social Changes in Modern China, and A Research on Underdeveloped Cities in Modern China. They have also carried out a lot of important research in Sichuan province and west China.
