In his speech, Riccardo expressed that what moved him most about Jiuzhaigou were its 114 beautiful lakes, born from a Tibetan love legend symbolizing nature’s rebirth and resilience. Drawing on his fieldwork experience, he emphasized that the sustainable development of natural heritage should not rely solely on mechanical management, but rather on fostering deep emotional connections among local communities, visitors, and the public. Only through such shared sentiment, he argued, can awareness and a sense of guardianship truly grow, allowing every visitor to become an inheritor of ecological values. He further called for the myths, natural stories, community narratives, and ecological restoration efforts of Jiuzhaigou to come together as part of a “Beautiful China Story,” offering inspiration and momentum for the sustainable development of natural heritage worldwide.
Riccardo’s speech, distinguished by its cross-cultural perspective and grounded local engagement, became a highlight of the conference. His contribution not only reflected young international scholars’ deep insights into heritage conservation but also underscored the growing role of youth volunteers in global environmental governance.
