Experiencing the Elegance of Intangible Cultural Heritage:

International Students from School of Tourism, Sichuan University Explore the Art of Chengdu Silver Filigree

On July 12, 2025, 8 international students from the Department of International Tourism and Hotel Management at Sichuan University participated in the “Discovering the Beauty of Sichuan” cultural experience event at the Sichuan University Museum. Themed “A Grand View of Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Art of Chengdu Silver Filigree,” the event was designed to foster intercultural exchange and showcase the richness of Chinese traditional craftsmanship.

The participating students, including both undergraduates and postgraduates from diverse countries, began the day with a guided tour of the Sichuan University Museum. They explored exhibitions on Chinese civilization and the cultural heritage of the Sichuan region, gaining valuable historical context before engaging in hands-on cultural activities.

The highlight of the day was a live demonstration by Mr. Tan Qinghua, a new-generation inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage—Chengdu Silver Filigree Inlay Art. Mr. Tan introduced the history, intricate production techniques, and contemporary innovations of the silver filigree craft, showcasing exquisite pieces created through wire drawing, weaving, and welding. The students were captivated by the craftsmanship and actively interacted with the artist, expressing admiration for the sophistication and beauty of traditional Chinese art forms.

Another memorable moment came during the interactive segment “A Journey Through Dynasties in a Cup of Tea.” Students from the Qingfeng Tea Art Club of Shehong No. 6 Primary School performed a traditional “long-spout teapot” tea ceremony, wearing period costumes. With graceful and skillful movements, the young performers brought the audience into the world of Chinese tea culture, earning rounds of applause. The international students described the performance as “like traveling through time,” and were deeply moved by the elegance and symbolism of the tea ritual.

This cultural event not only enhanced the international students’ understanding of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, but also built meaningful bridges for cross-cultural dialogue and friendship. Many participants expressed a desire to learn more about Chinese culture and share their experiences with others.

Looking ahead, Department of International Tourism and Hotel Management at School of Tourism, Sichuan University will continue to organize diverse cultural programs, promoting a dual-track approach to international cultural exchange—bringing Chinese culture abroad and welcoming global perspectives in. These efforts aim to deepen mutual understanding and support the global visibility of Chinese heritage.
